Florida DART was established in 1998. The need arose during the Florida wildfires that year, at the request of the Sherri Evans from Sumter SPCA/Humane Society, and Laura Bevan from Humane Society of the United States. Assistance was needed with emergency animal sheltering and evacuation of animals from disaster areas. Since that time, we have assisted local authorities as well as national and international organizations with animals in many types of disasters. In addition to natural disasters, we also assist with large scale man-made disasters. Examples are: puppy mill, hoarding or dog fighting seizures or a disease outbreak that requires an isolation area for animals.
We have worked with MANY organizations, including Humane Society of the United States, ASPCA, Best Friends, American Humane Association, University of Florida Maddies™ Shelter Medicine Program, SPCA Tampa Bay, Cat Depot and Humane Society of Southern Mississippi, just to name just a few.
